Brief Description

Magnesium is the 8th most abundant element, discovered in 1808 by Davy and later isolated by Bussy. It is widely used in aluminum alloys for cans and die casting.

It tarnishes slightly in air, and its powder ignites when heated, burning with a bright white flame. It is usually protected by a layer of oxide (MgO).

SOURCE:

Produced globally (USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, CIS), with significant production from seawater.

Availability Forms:

Chips Granules Powder Rod Foil Sheet Turnings Ribbon

Isolation Process

Produced commercially, often by recovering magnesium chloride (MgCl2) from seawater using calcium oxide (CaO).

Precipitation Stage Summary
CaO + H2O → Ca2+ + 2OH-
Mg2+ + 2OH- → Mg(OH)2
Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl → MgCl2 + 2H2O

Electrolysis of molten MgCl2 yields liquid magnesium.

Electrolysis Reaction Cells
cathode: Mg2+(l) + 2e- → Mg      anode: Cl-(l) → 1/2Cl2 (g) + e-

Another method involves the thermal reduction of dolomite [MgCa(CO3)2] with ferrosilicon.

Non-Electrolytic Thermal Reduction
2[MgO.CaO] + FeSi → 2Mg + Ca2SiO4 + Fe

The Mg is then distilled.

Areas of Application of Magnesium

Magnesium is the lightest of the structural metals; a quarter the weight of steel and a third lighter than aluminium. Today, magnesium is used in a diverse range of markets and applications, each one exploiting the unique physical and mechanical properties of the element and its alloys. World production of magnesium totals around 400,000 tonnes per annum and the figure is increasing annually as the lightweight properties of Magnesium Alloys are used increasingly in the automotive industry as a means of reducing weight, increasing fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Magnesium, due to its specific chemical and electro-chemical properties, can be used in many quality conscious fields of engineering such as space, laboratories and automobile industries. Nowadays its application includes many areas such as:

In Aerospace Engineering

Lightweight alloy structures to optimize payload capabilities and enhance fuel economy parameters.

In Aluminium Alloying

Acts as the main alloying element in aluminum sheet for the production of aluminum cans.

In Chemical Reduction

Functions as a reliable chemical reduction agent to isolate critical pure materials.

In Power Generation

Specialized industrial engineering deployment involving high thermal stability standards.

In Steel Desulphurisation

Direct metallurgical processing integration to extract toxic sulphur traces from steel elements.

In Cathodic Production

Deployment of sacrificial metallic anti-corrosion safety loops for structural environments.

Source & Extraction

To service growing demand, there is potentially no limit to magnesium output since magnesium comprises about 2.5% of the earth's surface. Seawater contains 0.14% magnesium and the element is abundant in minerals Carnallite, Dolomite, and Magnesite. Alloys used for structural applications can be recycled back into products displaying the same characteristics as primary material. Recycling requires only 5% of the energy required to produce the primary product.

Magnesium is produced for profit in such places as the United States and Canada, Western Europe, South America and Asia. In the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) it is produced for hard Western cash and, like aluminum, seems to be exported to the West.

Isolation Processes

Magnesium can be recovered commercially from massive seawater deposits as Magnesium Chloride (MgCl2) through initial reaction stages with Calcium Oxide (CaO):

Precipitation Chemical Summary
CaO + H2O → Ca2+ + 2OH-
Mg2+ + 2OH- → Mg(OH)2
Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl → MgCl2 + 2H2O

Electrolysis of hot molten MgCl2 affords magnesium as a liquid which is poured off, alongside chlorine gas:

Electrolysis Cells Reactions
Cathode: Mg2+(l) + 2e- → Mg
Anode: Cl-(l) → 1/2Cl2 (g) + e-

The alternative method involves "calcined" dolomite reacted with ferrosilicon alloy:

Thermal Reduction (Ferrosilicon) Reaction
2[MgO.CaO] + FeSi → 2Mg + Ca2SiO4 + Fe
